Your dad wants to do something different for Father’s Day, but you need something fun for all ages that’s manageable for his mobility. Here are six home care ideas for activities suitable to all ages and endurance levels.

Fishing

Consider having a family fishing day. Shore or pier fishing is not only fun, but your dad will end up with food at the end of the day. Check if licenses are needed for day fishing, you will likely need them for the adults unless you book a fishing expedition, in which case licenses are usually provided.

Orienteering

Locate your city or town’s orienteering sites and head out on walks through an easy trail or state park to search for some of the items on the list. Make sure you bring something to leave if your kids take a prize when they find the item.

Miniature Golf

Most areas have at least one miniature golf course to explore. Kids will have as much fun as your dad, but it’s a smaller course, so he doesn’t have to walk as far as he would playing traditional golf.

Picnics

Plan a picnic. Everyone can bring an item like a salad, bread, drinks, sandwich makings, chips, fruit, etc. If everyone chips in, it takes any pressure off your dad having to prepare anything or purchase picnic items. His home care provider can also assist in preparing something to take.

After planning the food for the picnic, decide where you want to go. Would your dad prefer a picnic on the beach where he could also shore fish, or is he more likely to want to be at a river where he can watch the children wade in the water?

Zoo Tours

Spend a day at the zoo. There are plenty of seating areas when your dad needs a break. There are also rides for children. See if it’s allowable to bring a picnic and make a full day of visiting the animals, learning more about nature, and making sure all age groups have a great time.

Train Ride

See if any of the local trains do short rides. These scenic train rides are fun, may contain a meal, and don’t require more than sitting and looking out windows. They’re perfect if your dad isn’t highly mobile.

Look for train rides that go up a mountain, along a lake, river, or ocean. Some will stop in a destination city and give you time to explore on foot. If there are no trains in your area, there may be scenic cruises on a lake, river, or ocean that are equally enjoyable.

If your dad’s strength and stamina are worsening with age, make sure he’s not trying to do too much and put his health or safety at risk. Call a home care agency and ask about having caregivers available to help with more difficult chores like laundry and changing the sheets. A home care advisor can help you make suitable arrangements.
