Seasonal trees have become very popular as home décor in the last few years. Essentially, they are holiday trees with lights that stay up all year. The decorations are changed to reflect the current season. People love seasonal trees because they are festive and fun and make the house feel a little more special.
Depending on how far advanced your senior parent’s Alzheimer’s is, they may not know what season it is. Seasonal trees are fantastic for seniors with Alzheimer’s as the decorations on the tree provide some context clues to help them figure out what time of the year it is. For example, if the tree is decorated for Easter, they know it’s spring.
Lights For Safety
Having lights on at night helps seniors when they need to get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom or get a drink. The lights can also make it easier for them to see safely as they walk through the room. Putting a seasonal tree in your senior parent’s living room or bedroom can give them soft light at night that will help them see what they need to see without making it difficult for them to sleep. If your senior parent has Alzheimer’s care, the Alzheimer’s care provider can make sure the tree lights are turned on at the same time each day. Or, you can put the lights on a timer.
Memory Jogging Ornament
Many people have been collecting Christmas ornaments and holiday decorations for decades. Seeing and handling those items can jog your senior loved one’s memories of the past. When putting Christmas ornaments on the tree, your senior parent may remember how they got each ornament. Things like when they received them or who gave them the ornament. In some families exchanging ornaments is a Christmas tradition to create memories. And putting out figurines and décor items that your senior parent associates with other holidays can jog memories of those family times too.
Blocking Hazard
A seasonal tree filled with lights and decorations is a fantastic way to create a physical block in a room if there is something in that room that you don’t want your senior loved one with Alzheimer’s to know about. For example, if there is a door to the outside patio in the living room and you don’t want your senior parent to be walking out that door all the time a seasonal tree placed in front of that door will hide the door so that your senior parent doesn’t see the door and try to go outside on their own.
Better Sleep
The soft warm lights and decorations on a seasonal tree call to mind the peace and tranquility of Christmas. Having a seasonal tree in the bedroom will help seniors sleep at night and give them memories and dreams of some of the best family holidays that they haven’t had in the past.
