Senior Care: Your dad needs to have his vision checked.
He’s nervous, so you’re trying to get him used to the things his eye doctor will look at. What steps help you and your senior care provider prepare your dad for his eye exam?
Create a List of Questions
Talk to your dad about the questions he has. He’s mentioned he sees floaters on sunny days or in bright lighting. He’s not sure they’re normal. Jot that question down.
Suppose he’s worried about a long family history of macular degeneration. He should talk to his doctor about his risk and be screened for this disease. He wants to speak to his doctor about his risk of other genetic eye conditions.
Your dad has high blood pressure and is on medications to control it. He knows that’s a risk factor for other eye conditions. He should ask if there are ways to screen for those diseases and what symptoms he should watch for.
If he still drives, your dad should ask his eye doctor if it’s safe for him to do so. Does he live in a state where eye exams are required to keep his license? If he needs a copy of his eye exam for the DMV, you need to address it during the exam.
Gather Information on Prescriptions
Take photos of each prescription or over-the-counter medicine your dad takes. Note the dosage and frequency. Some of this won’t matter to the doctor, but some blood pressure medications can cause blurry vision.
Senior Care: Fill Out Paperwork in Advance
Filling out paperwork in a rush upon arrival is frustrating. Instead, ask if the eye doctor has online forms. You can print them out and have them filled out. Some offices let you fill them out and submit them online.
Filling them out in advance ensures you don’t overlook anything important. You won’t forget to include all of your dad’s over-the-counter medications or health history when you can take your time.
What can companion care at home do to help your dad? Start with transportation services. His caregivers can drive him to his eye exam or take over driving all of the time if his vision reaches a point that he can’t do it on his own.
What if his vision is worsening? Your dad doesn’t have to be alone while he showers with senior care at home. He doesn’t have to try to do the cleaning on his own. He can have his caregivers cook meals, too. Call a home care agency to learn more.
