Contrary to what your loved one might think, you’re not simply trying to keep him from driving, right? So here’s how you can help him to keep driving for as long as possible.

Set up Fallback Plans if the Weather Is Bad

Bad weather can be a serious problem for your loved one while he’s driving.  Make an agreement with your loved one that he’ll revert to some fallback plans if the weather is too bad for him to drive.  This is a great opportunity for your loved one to rely on home care providers and family members as backups.

Do a Quick Self-assessment Before Driving

If you can convince your loved one that it can help, walk him through doing a self-assessment before he gets behind the wheel.  This can be as simple as your loved one noticing how well he’s able to see, whether he’s in any pain, and whether he has any other issues.  If the self-assessment doesn’t go well, it’s time to fall back on the alternate plans.

Plan Trips Along Routes without a Lot of Traffic

When your loved one has a trip coming up, even if it’s to run errands, help him to figure out a route that has less traffic in general.  That might mean planning the trip for a specific time of day or it might mean altering the route a bit. Less traffic can mean an easier trip overall.

Keep the Car Maintained

The last thing that you want is for your loved one to have a breakdown or to be stranded somewhere. Keep the car maintained as much as possible to help avoid that situation.  Double check that your loved one has gas in the car and that the car is operational so that he doesn’t have to worry about it.

Check in with Doctors Regularly

Your loved one’s doctors can be just the help that you need to serve as an objective partner in determining whether it’s time for your loved one to stop driving.  Make regular appointments and make sure that you test your loved one’s vision and any other aspects of his health that could make driving difficult for him.
If your loved one’s situation changes, hopefully, he’ll be more open to rethinking his stance on driving because you worked so hard to keep him in the driver’s seat.
