Home Care in Hillsborough CA
Taking more time for yourself could sound like something that you’ve always wanted to do, but never quite figured out how to do. It’s easier than you might think, but it does require a commitment on your part. Once you start to enjoy regular time on your own, you’ll wonder how you ever got along without it.
Schedule it In
You probably schedule all sorts of things into your planner for the week. There are the appointments for your elderly loved one as well as anything that you have to do for work or for other family members. But do you have time for yourself scheduled into your calendar? If you’re like most people, you probably don’t. It’s time to start making appointments with yourself.
Make it a Routine
Another way to make time for you easier to schedule is to make it a routine. Give yourself a set amount of time every day or every week, for example, and keep that appointment with yourself. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your brain can adapt to this routine, regular appointment with yourself.
Unplug from Electronics
When you do finally take time for yourself, make sure that you “unplug” while you’re engaging in whatever activities you enjoy. Turning your phone off or setting it to vibrate allows you to focus on the moment and not on what could be happening. Let whoever is taking over for you know when you’ll be available again and that they can leave a message for you.
Let Yourself Actually Leave
Some family caregivers prefer to take their alone time in the same location as their elderly loved one. This is usually in case of emergency, of course, but it means that you’re not really gone. Take the time to actually leave and go somewhere else for a change of scenery. Leave another family member or your loved one’s elder care providers in charge and get out of the house for a little while. You’ll be amazed at how refreshed you’ll feel when you get back.
Don’t let yourself off the hook. If you do, you’ll find yourself right back in the position of taking care of others but not yourself.
