Getting dressed is something that most people don’t think much about. It’s just a normal activity. But for your senior family member, getting dressed might be a lot more difficult now than it has ever been. She might need to make some changes.
Wardrobe Adjustments Help
If your elderly family member is really not looking forward to needing assistance getting dressed, that’s understandable. You might also be able to put off bigger help needs by making some wardrobe adjustments for her. Instead of clothing with small buttons or complicated fasteners, try zippers or clothing that pulls on. Look at what challenges her about getting dressed and look for accommodations.
Choice Works Wonders
When you’re the one helping you’re senior get dressed on a regular basis you might not realize it, but you likely have reduced her choices. As her need for help grows, it’s even more vital that your elderly family member has as many choices as possible. They help her to feel empowered, especially when she doesn’t feel empowered at all.
Order Matters
One way that you can help your senior to dress without taking over is to lay her clothes out for her. If you do this, how you order the clothing can make a big difference for her. Make things easier by laying the pieces out in the order she needs to put them on, with the innermost clothing items on the top of the stack.
Leave Plenty of Time
If dressing is always a hurried and rushed event, that plus any difficulties your senior has with dressing are just going to magnify each other. It’s a much better idea to make sure that your senior always has plenty of time to get dressed. Any time that it’s possible, ensure she’s got all the time she could possibly need.
She Might Need Additional Help
At some point, your elderly family member may need quite a bit more help than even you’re able to provide. Sometimes aging family members aren’t comfortable having family members help with something so intimate. If that’s the case, it’s a much better idea to hire home care providers who can help. They can make the task easy, fun, and safe.
Keep an eye on how these adjustments help your senior or seem to make her feel uncomfortable at times. Talk to her about how she’s feeling and about what will help her the most.
